Welcome to the ALL NEW KDAL blog. I am Rik Jordan. Been at KDAL since 1978, and the morning show for about a hundred years.
Over those years, it's been a great hobby of mine to wade through swamps. I grew up in an area of Hennipen County that was covered with swamps. They are called wetlands now, but the two names mean the same to me. Wetland host so many great critters. The first to jump out in the spring are Red Wing Black birds. Their song sounds like they are singing about Coco Wheats, the breakfast cereal. That mating call makes me smile with old memories of my youth. The Bald Eagles will be close behind, then the seagulls, Blue Jays, wrens and Robins. The eagles and osprey will be hanging in the thermals to spot nervous mammals...and a few fish that didn't make it through the winter.
The unusually warm weather of March gaves hints of what will come in April and May. But obviously, the swamps and lakes are far from opening yet. But when the melt starts up, take a hike in a nearby wetland. It's an excellant way to see the creatures as they prepare for nesting and mating. Hartley Park in the Woodland area of Duluth is a great area to hear and see those first arriving birds. The park has maps and signs and people to help you figure out what's going on in early spring.
By the way, the Minnesota fishing season will not interfer with Mothers Day this May. Mothers Day is the weekend before the boys head off to the lake. That doesn't happen too often, but this year, it will.
